Closing the Deal for Transportation
Urge Your Members of Congress to Send the Bill to the President’s Desk
After months of consideration, Congress has established a path forward for the highway and public transportation reauthorization bill.
Following a joint announcement by Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman John Mica last week, the conference committee announced a plan to consolidate overlapping and duplicative federal programs; streamline the project delivery process to shorten project times and save limited federal dollars; give states the flexibility to target federal funds where they are most needed; and increase opportunities for private investment.
As FreeEnterprise.com said:
The U.S. Chamber congratulates House and Senate conference committee members for their commitment to negotiations and for their resolve in finding an equitable agreement to a long-term transportation reauthorization bill.
This legislation will save thousands of jobs in construction and related industries in the near term through the combination of the levels of investment and through reforms that will stretch federal dollars further in highway, transit, and safety projects. Long-term, these investments will strengthen the nation’s economy and spur economic growth.

Without long-term assurances of a strong federal funding commitment to transportation, states and local communities will be hesitant to start projects or invest in infrastructure upgrades. Meanwhile, scarce resources will continue to be wasted through a fragmented set of programs that delay projects and prevent states from addressing their most pressing needs. Inaction has, and will continue to, cost the U.S. economy trillions of dollars.
With the announcement, Congress has the opportunity to overcome partisan gridlock—and start to regain the country’s confidence in their ability to govern—by immediately acting on the conference committee agreement.
Now is the time to rebuild America. Send your letter of support today.
