Golden Taco and Golden Molcajete Awarded to Local Taquerias
A crowd of thousands flocked to LSUS on Friday, May 3, for the second annual Taco Wars! Brought to you by the Louisiana Food Prize, the free event featured twelve local taquerias battling it out for the coveted Golden Taco and Golden Molcajete awards for Best Taco and Best Salsa respectively.
The competition was fierce and, after careful deliberation, a panel of judges determined that EL BAZAR MEXICANO #2 had the top taco and was awarded the Golden Taco and $1,000 cash!
“There are three days in my life I’ve been the happiest,” said Julian Gutierrez, owner of El Bazar Mexicano #2. “The first was my wedding day, then April 26 when my child was born, and now today when we won Taco Wars. Thank you to my crew, and to our people. This is the best event!”
The taquerias participating this year were Habanero’s (2018 Golden Taco winner), Taqueria La Michoacana (2018 Golden Molcajete winner), Uneeda Taco, Parish Taceaux, Taqueria La Reyna Del Sur, Johnny Frijoles, El Bazar Mexicano #2, Trejo’s Mexican Restaurant, Ramirez Mexican Restaurant, Miguelito Burrito, El Cabo Verde, and Tacos Zorry Huasteco. Each taqueria was able to set their own menu and pricing, and received 100% of the proceeds from their sales.
“Despite the crazy weather, we were thrilled to see thousands of people from our community coming out to celebrate Latino culture,” said Gregory Kallenberg, Executive Director of the Prize Foundation. “Apparently, Shreveport comes together over their love of tacos. Viva la Taco Wars!”
The Golden Molcajete judging ended in a tie! Both Parish Taceaux and Ramirez Mexican Restaurant were selected as the best salsa by the audience and awarded $500.
