Save the Monument to the Future
Preserving Our Past. Creating Opportunity for the Next Generation.
A century ago, the people of Shreveport did something remarkable. Neighbors, business leaders, and civic groups came together to fund and build the Shreve Memorial Library in the heart of downtown — a structure so magnificent that one local newspaper called it a “Monument to the Future.”
Today, that future depends on us.
A Landmark Worth Saving
Designed by renowned architect J.P. Annan and opened in 1923, this one-of-a-kind building is a striking blend of Romanesque and Italian Revival styles, featuring a red clay tile roof, grand arched windows, and a frieze engraved with the names of history’s greatest writers and philosophers. It stands today as one of the few remaining examples of Shreveport’s celebrated architectural heritage still serving the public.
But this building is more than an architectural treasure, it is a symbol of what can happen when a community comes together to invest in its future.
For more than 100 years, these walls have witnessed the growth of Shreveport, serving as a place where people gathered to learn, connect, and build a stronger community. Today, it has the potential to do so once again.
After more than a century of service, however, the building reached a turning point. Roof leaks caused extensive water damage and collapsed ceilings. The steel frames of the original 1920s windows corroded beyond repair. Aging HVAC systems and infrastructure could no longer support modern needs. Faced with the prospect of losing this community landmark, the Chamber partnered with the City to assume ownership and take responsibility for its restoration.
Saving this building is not simply about preserving the past. It is about creating opportunities for the future. A restored Chamber building will provide a vibrant gathering place for business leaders, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, educators, and community organizations. It will serve as a catalyst for collaboration, economic development, and downtown revitalization, a place where new ideas are launched, partnerships are formed, and community progress takes shape.
By preserving this landmark, we are investing in more than one building. We are investing in the future of Shreveport.
The Work Has Already Begun
This is no longer just a plan on paper; the design and restoration are well underway:
- The entire roof and gutter system has been replaced and the upper cornice repaired — no more leaks.
- Water intrusion in the basement has been stopped with improved drainage.
- The first phase of landscaping is complete.
- Replacement of the windows, elevator, and HVAC systems is now in design.
Every completed project moves us closer to reopening a revitalized community asset, one that will serve businesses, organizations, and future generations while helping strengthen downtown Shreveport.
What Your Support Will Make Possible
The next phase of restoration will bring this historic building fully back to life. Refurbished original windows, a restored lobby, modern meeting spaces, updated technology, and improved accessibility. Outside a transformed plaza will create a welcoming destination for our community and restore a park-like setting to one of downtown’s few remaining greenspaces.
But the true impact goes far beyond the building itself.
This will become a place where business leaders gather to solve challenges, entrepreneurs build relationships, nonprofits connect with supporters, and community organizations come together to create positive change. It will serve as leading-edge business and event center, a hub for collaboration, leadership, and economic opportunity in the heart of downtown Shreveport.
The result won’t simply be a restored landmark. It will be a vibrant community asset that supports economic growth, strengthens downtown revitalization, and helps shape the future of our region for generations to come.
Build the Next Century of Impact
The restoration of this landmark, including an endowment to ensure its preservation for generations to come, is a $10 million investment in the future of our community. Thanks to the generosity of donors who share this vision, more than $5 million has already been raised, and the project has been approved for historic tax credits.
Now, we invite you to help complete the journey.
Every contribution brings us closer to creating a vibrant gathering place where businesses grow, leaders connect, and our community comes together to shape the future of Shreveport.
A century ago, citizens invested in a building they believed would serve generations they would never meet. Their vision created a lasting legacy for our community.
Today, we have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to do the same.
Join us in preserving this landmark, strengthening our downtown, and creating opportunities for future generations. Together, we can ensure that Shreveport’s “Monument to the Future” continues to inspire, serve, and bring people together for the next hundred years.
